4 WINNING Strategies for Tech Resumes

IT and technology opportunities are on the rise, and have been for a while now. It seems every industry leverages IT and technology in some form and has a critical need for tech talent. Universities and certification organizations are continuing to expand their programs to train and equip more and more professionals across more and more disciplines.

With so much activity surrounding IT and tech opportunities, jobseekers in those fields need to make sure they put their best foot forward when it comes to their job search.  Beyond networking and informational interviews, they need to make sure they are using resume strategies that accurately capture and communicate their incredible talent, value, and skill sets to potential employers…and they must communicate these elements quickly and clearly.  

If you’re a technology professional, here are 4 WINNING strategies to incorporate in your IT/tech resume today:

 

1.    Technical Proficiencies Section

I often see IT jobseekers include specific technologies spread throughout their professional experience section, forcing recruiters and hiring managers to have to sift through the entire document to determine if they have experience with a specific technology. 

Instead of this, include a Technical Proficiencies section on your resume, at the top following your summary statement. Include applications, software, equipment, vendors, etc. that you have experience with.  You can also consider including generic terms, such as “routers” or “firewalls” in this section as well. 

This gives recruiters and hiring managers a quick one-stop-shop for your technical skills.  You can always add more information under your previous positions, elaborating on your specific experience with each technology.

 

2.    Regulatory Compliance

Just like creating a one-stop-shop for your technical proficiencies, you’ll want to do the same with your knowledge and experience with regulatory guidelines.  These guidelines can vary greatly depending on industries.  Calling out specific regulatory experience early in your resume will boost the confidence of recruiters and hiring managers as they realize you are knowledgeable in these areas.  These will help position you as an expert in your field.

Some common (and high value) regulatory protocols include: HIPAA,  DoD 8510.01, Risk Management Framework (RMF), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), Cybersecurity Framework Core (CFS), and the list could go on and on.

 

3.    Define Industry Spaces

Quickly define the industry spaces where you have experience by including this information in your summary at the top of your resume.  Because technologies, processes, and regulations differ vastly among industries, you’ll want to define what spaces you are familiar with right off the bat. 

Included in this is the scope of your support and the organizations you supported, such as enterprise-wide support for Fortune 500 corporations, or multi-site regional support for a medium size non-profit, or business client support for 10+ local small businesses.  Just reading these 3, very different, examples no doubt gives you 3 very different ideas about the scope of responsibility and challenges that goes with each. 

Being specific about your industry spaces, and scopes, will help you quickly establish your brand in that area.  You’re showing that you are proficient in specific technologies, you have built a working knowledge base around leading regulatory guidelines, and now you have experience in the specific spaces…and all of this should be before your Professional Experience section!

 

4.    Your Impact

In the Professional Experience section, jobseekers often get wrapped up in only communicating what technologies or processes they utilized and the tasks they did.  They leave off the IMPACT they had on the organization. 

That impact, or result, demonstrates your value.  In technology resumes, it is absolutely important to go into some detail about technologies you used and how you specifically used them.  But equally as important are the results you were able to accomplish by leveraging your skills.  For example, if you wrote a script for an internal business process, be sure to tell not just what program you used to write the script, but how that script automated a manual process, trimming it from 3 days to just 20 minutes!

Quantifying the impact your skill sets had on an organization adds incredible value to your resume.
